Junior Scientist Course at Otago University in Wellington

In Term 2, a group of 25 senior students had the opportunity to attend a three week science course run by the Otago Medical School based at Wellington Hospital.

Our keen scientists learned about the structure of cells, grew bacteria, simulated blood transfusions and vaccine responses and extracted DNA from strawberries. This was an incredible experience which inspired and challenged our young scientists. It was particularly exciting for the students to work in a real lab using incredible resources.

Our workshop leader was Dr Michelle Thunders from the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine. She and the other staff commented on how much they enjoyed working with our curious, engaged and enthusiastic young people.
